Hiya, everyone! Noreen here with a book review on “Poison Princess” by Kresley Cole.

This is my first time reviewing a romance, so I’ll try and keep my criticism about pointless lovey dovey stuff to a minimum. This book is centered in Louisiana and takes the perspective of a girl named Evie Greene. The plot of this story, like many teen novels, is in a post-apocalyptic world. I believe, however, that this book has a very fresh spin on the clichè. Very interesting characters and well written action scenes make it a story of its own kind.

Going more into characters, I found myself being intrigued with Evie from the very start. Being a part of the second richest family in town, she seems very entitled and prissy. There’s more there, however. Evie started experiencing hallucinations at the end of Sophomore year. This caused her mother to send her to a mental hospital. I know that its very common for main characters to have something special about them that others don’t understand but the author describes it differently.

Evie and the other main characters (other than the love interest) are what the book calls cards. The cards are people with special powers and those people are a part of a prophecy. The powers were really interesting. Evie, for example; her card is The Empress which has abilities like poison claws, power over plants, thorn tornados, etc.

The way Cole has given the card power and meaning is truly interesting. The powers were very unique, which is way more than I would expect from some random paranormal romance I pulled off the shelf. This book surprised me in many ways, actually. The author wrote jealousy very well for Evie.  I could sense the tension in the room at that part of the book. She wrote the way that Evie was trying to suppress her powers extremely well, so well that I was taken aback. At some points in this book I actually felt like little things, like the way Cajun French Jack (love interest) speaks, matters. Its a nice touch and makes it seem just a little more real.

Overall, I have to say that this book is definitely a fresh surprise for me. The way the emotions were written, and who the characters were was just fantastic. For a romance, it definitely did not fail, even having some pretty intense moments, it still had time to have cutesy stuff. The characters were all very well written and Cole knew when it was time to be serious and not just screw up the moment with romance. This book reminds me a lot of the book I reviewed a week or two back called Throne of Glass, if you liked that book then you’ll most likely enjoy this book as well. If you’re into post-apocalyptic worlds then you’d really like this book, though the author is hell-bent on getting cute stuff across so watch out for that. Really though, give this book a shot and you might be pleasantly surprised.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s book review. If you’ve read the book or you just have something to say, comment it down below (just be sure to mark your spoilers). Thanks for reading!
