Pokemon Of The Week – Raikou

The Pokemon of the week is Raikou! Raikou is the electric type of the Legendary Beasts. It was released in 2nd Gen, Johto Region along with Entei and Suicune. Ho-oh was said to have created the trio after the burning of the Brass Tower in Ecruteak City. Raikou is number #243 in the national Pokedex and can be found in the Trackless Forest in “Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire”. By default it will be level 50 when you encounter it and if you catch it the Pokedex will say that Raikou embodies the speed of lightning. The roars of this Pokemon send shockwaves shuttering through the air and shake the ground as if lightning bolts had come crashing down.

Raikou’s greatest stat is tied between its speed and special attack. They are both base 115, which is pretty high. Due to the high speed and special attack, a good competitive set to run for the OU tier is the Assault Vest set. The correct nature for it would be a timid nature and an E.V. Spread of 252 Special Attack/ 32 Special Defense/ 224 Speed. The moveset to run is Thunderbolt, Volt Switch, Hidden Power (Ice), and Extrasensory. Some people switch out Extrasensory for Shadow Ball to 2HKO a Latios. Extrasensory is for doing some serious damage to Venusaurs. Hidden power (Ice) is to take out Landorus-T, Landorus, Garchomp and Gliscors.

Another set you could run is the Calm Mind set. Leftovers or Life orb should be used when using this set in the OU tier. Timid nature with the E.V. spread 32 HP/ 252 Special Attack/ 224 Speed would be best. The perfect move set would be Calm Mind, Thunderbolt, Hidden Power (Ice) and Extrasensory. However, Substitute can be used in place of Extrasensory. It just depends on the user.

Raikou is a great special attacker and I have my own special one for FFAs against my friends. Its really fun to use and can be very powerful on a team. I think Raikou is a good counter for Landorus and Gliscors which are normally a pain to get rid of because they can be bulky and set up field hazards. If you choose to use it on your team, I hope it serves you well!
