The Comic Book Virgin: Hawkeye

Hey guys! I’m Lauren. I usually edit, but then I got to thinking; why not try something new? And so, I give you The Comic Book Virgin. Every other Saturday, I’ll be giving you my first impressions of whatever comic I get my hands on. Let’s get started.

When I got this idea, I was at Bridget’s house. You may know her; she literally runs the comic section by herself. As soon as I told her, her eyes lit up, and she then proceeded to dump ten comics into my lap. The first comic in the pile was “Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon“, which contains the first three issues of the 2012 series by Matt Fraction, which you can read about here.

Basically, I’m in love. I love Clint. He’s intelligent, witty, and a little bit of a smart ass. Something about the way Matt writes makes it really easy to picture what Clint’s voice sounds like in my head. The words just pour out, and his commentary is great. He comes off as a gruff, film noir type of character, but in reality, he’s a total sweetheart. Clint is just a good guy. Whether he’s paying off his building’s debt, saving a dog, or kicking some tracksuit mafia butt, he makes it seem so easy, and simply the right thing to do. That’s what I love about him. He’s an everyday superhero, albeit a bit of a goof, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Another thing that I love about the series is Kate Bishop. Kate is “the most gifted bowman” that Clint has ever met, but “she’s like nine years old and spoiled rotten”. For the most part, she hangs out with Clint and rescues him from whatever bad idea he’s gotten himself into, while also giving him crap for it the entire time. I love their relationship; it’s witty, and they roll with each other’s punches.

While the writing is great, I also love the art. It’s easy to follow, and while some of the faces look weird in certain panels, I feel like it’s something that makes even the simplest scenes come to life without making the big fight scenes too distracting.

Not to mention this panel is absolutely hysterical. It’s a little risque for this site, but I’ll live.
