In the world of video games, 2022 is an exciting year for upcoming releases.

The world continues to struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain issues, as well as their impact on our hobbies. But, the video games industry at least seems to feel a bit more stable than in years past.

We’re certainly thankful for a relatively quiet January, with few major releases giving us a chance to catch up on our backlog.

Yet, it’s also an exciting time to look forward to what’s in store! Barring any major delays, upcoming video game releases include God of War Ragnarok, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 and Starfield.

With so many awesome titles coming, we at UzerFriendly decided to highlight our most anticipated video games of 2022.

Elden Ring

As all of my friends can attest, any time FromSoftware reveals new information about their upcoming title Elden Ring, I will write full essays in their DMs or in the UzerFriendly Discord. I fell in love with Dark Souls just a year or two before the third game was released, and it has made such a monumental impact on my life. It didn’t cure my depression, it didn’t help me manage my myriad frustrations. What it did do, however, was engross me in a beautifully crafted world that captured my imagination. Since Hidetaka Miyazaki took the helm, FromSoftware has yet to fail on eliciting that feeling of wonder in their games. I absolutely cannot wait to finally immerse myself in the setting and history of a shiny new dark fantasy epic when Elden Ring releases next month.

Elden Ring will release on February 25, 2022 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC.

Digimon Survive

Digimon Survive was first announced in July 2018, and we’ve barely heard anything about it since. It is the latest entry in a long line of Digimon games, but with a unique twist. Previous games in the series have been standard JRPGs, tapping into the collectable monster formula made popular by Pokémon. Survive, however, looks to be a turned-based strategy RPG more akin to Final Fantasy Tactics or Fire Emblem with social elements that can affect gameplay. Bandai Namco announced Digimon Con, an online event scheduled to be streamed through their official YouTube channel in February, with a segment focused on the game series. I’m crossing my fingers for news and an early 2022 release!

Neon White

The new year promises a deluge of exciting titles (GhostWire: Tokyo, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals) as well as video games certain to be pushed to 2023. I see you, STALKER 2, with your December release date. But if I had to pick one to highlight as my most anticipated, Neon White wins by a landslide. The game’s slick visuals coupled with frenetic combat and movement alone make it a video game to watch. But the involvement of Donut County developer Ben Esposito and OK KO! writer Ryann Shannon elevates that hype to unforeseen levels.

Sifu

It’s been while since we’ve had a spectacle fighter game looking so slick. Sifu‘s core mechanic allows players to trade max health for more damage and moves when as your character ages or dies. I think this could be an encouraging way of handling failure in the game, rather than giving players a game over screen.

Sifu will release on February 8, 2022, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC.

Tactics games

I am going to cheat here and say tactics games as a whole. I’ve always been a fan of tactics video games, and to my delight, 2022 has a smörgåsbord of titles coming out. Triangle Strategy is probably the most highly promoted, with last year’s demo assuring I would buy it on release day. However, I am just as excited for Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp and Metal Slug Tactics. Until then, I will bide my time with a playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions on my PlayStation Vita as a warm-up!

Triangle Strategy will release on March 04, 2022, on Nintendo Switch.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp will release in spring 2022 on Nintendo Switch.

Metal Slug Tactics will release in 2022 on Nintendo Switch and PC.
