On Thursday, June 11th, Sony unveiled a bunch of games and details for their new system, the Playstation 5. During the hour long “Future of Gaming” livestream, we got to see trailers for a few upcoming titles. Here are the most exciting announcements from the event:
Solar Ash
I am in love with the look and feel of “Solar Ash”. It reminds me of “Journey” aesthetically and the world looks like it’s going to have a ton of interesting areas to explore. A definite stand out amongst the big announcements, I cannot wait to see more!

Goodbye Volcano High
Goodbye Volcano High gives us dino girls who play guitar. We have been starving for guitar-playing dino girl content. Finally, some good frickin food.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

An actual quote from the notes I took while watching the PS5 broadcast: “AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MILES HOLY CRAP AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Looks absolutely gorgeous AN ACTUAL SPIDER-MAN MILES GAME OH MY LORD”. The hype I have to finally see Miles as the main character is unreal. Even though this is long overdue, I do think it comes at the perfect time. He is such a wonderful role model for young Black and Hispanic kids, and I hope he brings in a whole new love for the superhero genre.

Bugsnax
The other game that looked… Interesting, was Bugsnax . I have NEVER seen a game that was as colorful and friendly, but that outright SCARED THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF ME. It was so unsettling, and I really don’t think I would be able to play the game. But sure as heck looks interesting, that’s for sure.

Ghostwire Tokyo
“Ghostwire Tokyo” fascinated me at last year’s E3 with a reveal trailer that was equal parts mesmerizing and horrifying. Though I was happy to see more of the game, I was surprised at the focus on combat. The ghouls and ghastly creatures presented in the gameplay reveal are certainly terrifying, but I can’t help but wonder if their apparent role as common enemy types will dampen the horror of it all. Here’s hoping Tango Gameworks can find that balance.

Deathloop
As a fan of the “Dishonored” series, I eagerly awaited Arkane Studios’ next proper title. “Deathloop” certainly impresses with its ‘70s exploitation aesthetic and fast-paced action, featuring many of the abilities from the aforementioned series. Blackreef seems to be a compelling setting, so I do hope that, despite the time limit at the heart of the story, we have an opportunity to learn about this world as one would expect from a proper immersive sim.

Demon’s Souls
From Software keeps doing it to me. I get away from my masochistic addiction to the Soulsborne series and here we are again. Demon’s Souls is one of the titles I had originally avoided from the series, mostly due to hearing a lot of the mechanics weren’t as refined as in Dark Souls. Here we are in 2020 and they’re remaking it. As the saying goes, “Ah sh*t, here we go again.”
