Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduced three new starters: Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly. Here are our predictions for how they might evolve.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are on their way!

Nintendo announced the new games on Feb. 27, along with three new adorable starters: Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly.

Fans have started choosing sides, picking their favorite of Gen 9’s starting trio. But if past Pokémon titles have demonstrated anything, it can be difficult to break down how their evolutions might turn out.

Given what we know, let’s try to predict how Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly might evolve!

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Evolutions for Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly
Sprigatito, Fuecoco and Quaxly, the Gen 9 starters for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Will Sprigatito stay on four legs?

Sprigatito is a simplistic and fluffy green cat. I adore the name of this Pokemon; “Sprigatito” sounds like a herb and pasta dish.

The name Sprigatito did remind me of something exceptionally interesting. “Sprig-” is just like a mythical “Spriggan” from the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. These creatures tend to be composed of wood and magic. The Spriggan-like Senche-Cat mount in the Elder Scrolls Online also comes to mind. If Sprigatito is anything like a Spriggan Senche-Cat in its evolved forms it will likely be Grass/Fairy.

In the new grass starter’s physician design, Sprigatito is very similar to the fire Alolan starter, Litten. Unlike Litten’s ridiculous final form Incineroar, I’m looking forward to Sprigitato having lion-like quadruped features as it evolves. Many other Pokemon fans (and myself) are hoping Sprigatito will continue to be a quadruped.

Fuecoco

Fuecoco red lizard-like crocodile fire starter. This little guy has already won my heart and has the most curious designs out of the three. There are overwhelming aspects of its design to break down.

In “Fuecoco”, the “-coco” part of the name appears to be connected to folklore “El Coco” if you want to read more about it you can find it here. In Portuguese folklore, El Coco is a dragon, which is likely behind Fuecoco’s croc design.

For the physical design, Fuecoco appears to have an apple-lizard body like Appleton or a little lava spout similar to a volcano-like Mega Camerupt? The little stem indicates it could be either.

On further inspection, if we look at Fuecoco’s white face which might even appear as a skull. Rather than an apple, perhaps Fuecoco is a red hot Ghost Pepper Pokemon! Ghost-type Pokemon Duskull literally has a skull-like mask for a face.

If Ghost Pepper’s representation is correct, Fuecoco will likely evolve into a Ghost/Fire Pokemon like the Hisui Starter, Typhlosion. If not Ghost Pepper, a Volcano is a likely second choice here like Fire/Ground Camerupt. For the final evolution, it might have the same body shape as the Rock/Dragon dinosaur Tyrantrum.

Quaxly

Lastly we have Quaxly, another adorable water-type waterfowl to the water-type Duck-like collection.

Quaxly will most likely end up being a Water / Flying-type, which is expected unless its next evolution gives us more clues. This little guy appears to have a pompadour hairstyle and flamboyant posture. I could not help but notice that Quaxly has blue feet and there is only one real-life counterpart: The infamous Blue-footed Booby! These goofy sea birds are only found in the Gulf of Mexico.

Water Starters like Primarina and Inteleton give off a fabulous campy aesthetic. I would expect Quaxly to eventually look like a fancier version of Swanna.
